Woodworking Adhesives and Its Categories
Wood adhesives are very important when working with woodworking projects. It is commonly used to bond different pieces of wood together. Natural wood adhesives were popular until the 1940s after which synthetic adhesives were introduced. Thus there are two categories of wood adhesives namely the natural and synthetic types.
Natural adhesives include animal, vegetable, casein, soybean, and blood glues. These were used prior to the year 1940s and its ingredients come directly from the immediate environment.
Synthetic adhesives on the other hand comes from resins, they are man made polymers, created by man for specific wood working tasks. They are described as moisture resistant, and often stronger than natural adhesives.
Thermosetting adhesives, a category of synthetic adhesives comprises of urea, phenol, melamine, and epoxy. Urea is being the most popular adhesive, Phenol being very well known for its strength and epoxy as the most expensive, making it impractical for large scale projects.
